The Bug Box

We did a bug box science experiment and went on a backyard safari to see what we could find and learn more about. Our science journal is growing - there is so much new stuff to explore up here in the hills!

The little explorers are ready
...and a big helper...
We have found a weird, angry fly - that bit me!!! We didn't manage to find out its name...
...so we went looking for something else...and we found GOLD ants!!!
They lived in this log!
And they have a golden behind!
Here is a picture we found on the Internet. It's a Golden-tailed Spiny Ant. Exactly the same as the one we found!
Agnes having a closer look in the viewing-bug-box
Then it was time to do an entry in the science journal
Found by: Elliot. Date: 5 May.
Here's the finished journal entry...
...with all the information about the bug...
...and some drawings...about it bit mamma!

Well done, Elliot! Now we know a lot more about the ants in our garden!

  1. What a fun day! Ava always liked the science journal that Milla kept and we've been meaning to do the same but never get around to it. I think we need to get started - although not with bugs as we don't get many of those around here. I'm not going to complain about that! We might have to do a squirrel project. There are lots of cute, fluffy squirrels running around Berkeley :)
