Easter is not Easter without decorated eggs - so while we are waiting for the Easter Bunny to come visit us, we have been busy painting eggs.
The egg, an ancient symbol of new life, has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring and symbolising rebirth of the earth. The Easter egg was adopted by early Christians later on. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus' emergence from the tomb and resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to a t least the 13th century (history.com). one explanation for this custom is that eggs were former a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.
And we are continuing the tradition. We hollowed out our eggs before painting them by piercing the shell with a needle and then we blew out the contents. We lost a few along the way....scrunched by little eager hands:) But by the end of our art session, we had made a beautiful Easter decoration!
